Bettis Academy

The Reverend Alexander Bettis, a former slave who could read but not write, established Bettis Academy in Trenton, SC, in 1882 to provide education for African-Americans in the state, with both day and boarding options. The curriculum emphasized the Bible and religious instruction, literacy, mechanical and agricultural arts, and home economics. Though Bettis Academy closed in 1950, an annual event is held there each April. For more information, 803.649.7709.
