Portrait of Former SC Governor
At a recent art auction in Christie's of London, a portrait of the last royal governor of South Carolina by Thomas Gainsborough went up for sale. Prior to the auction, speculation estimated as much as a half million dollars might be bid for the work. The half-length portrait of the royal governor, Lord William Campbell, shows Campbell in his naval uniform and is considered painted in the mid to late-1770s, after Campbell had returned to England.
