Holiday Financial Statistics

Some retailers' faces have little Mona-Lisa-style almost-smiles acknowledging that shoppers apparently spent a bit more this holiday season than last. Though credit is still frozen in many sectors and unemployment levels remain high, many stores did not resort to wide-spread "fire" sales that lost so much money for them last year. This year's retail sales show a spending rise of 3.6%, compared with only 3.2% of last year, according to one credit company.
