What is a Knot?

Gale warnings are issued by marine authorities when wind speed rises between 34 - 47 knots or greater. So, what is a knot? It's a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. That is, 1.852 kilometers and approximately 1.151 miles per hour. Knots are used in maritime, air, and meteorology measurements, and, yes, originally the "knot" was actually knots on a rope to measure.
