What is the Taste of Unami?

Sight, smell, and finally taste make foods appealing (or not). In taste, we recognize the four principals: sweet, salt, sour, and bitter. However, what is this so-called "fifth" taste, unami (pronounced "UU-NAM-EE") that we are hearing about on the cooking channels? It is the taste of amino acids, that is, proteins such as those found in meat and some cheeses. When all tastes balance, then food tastes, well, good (whatever that means)!
