April 2010, Volume 3, Issue 4

Go ahead! Let the warmth and relaxation of "spring fever" wash over you! You deserve a get-away to the beach!

Easter weather settled on the Grand Strand in a colorful celebration of the season. Parks and landscaped gardens, wilderness and nature preserves, all have been ablaze with blooms and new green leaves for the past several weeks. Here on the Carolina coast, spring is gentle blend of warm days with plenty of sunshine followed by crisp nights. Many locals and visitors alike have strolled to the shoreline to get in touch with this warming trend. As April blends into May, many people will be doing even more in terms of outdoor exercise, looking for adventure in the countryside, and booking tee times. Others stroll the tidal marshes and beaches, shovel sand into colorful buckets, and expose their bare feet sand to the sun and salt water.

Some of our guests are already out in the ocean water, even in mid-April. Already people are shoeless and enjoying the feeling of free feet. People out fishing, however, find that the water temperature is slightly more important to the fish they are trying to catch. In that case, an average of mid-60 degrees is needed before they begin to be catchable. While you wait for the ocean water to warm up just a little bit more for either swimming or fishing, why not take a break to the beach where a world of adventure awaits you. Venture into sand-castle-building, hunting for shark's teeth and shells, spotting dolphins, and much more here at the seaside. Our guest list is building with people who simply cannot wait. Bathing-suit-clad vacationers bob out in the waves up to their neckline from about 10 AM to 6 PM, and the sunbathers are soaking in the early spring rays.

Check out our website for the fabulous discounts available prior to Memorial Day. If you are not already receiving emailed notices of exclusive savings that go out all year round, subscribe to our e-saver list or link to us in Facebook. With plenty to do here from swimming to boating to golf to shopping, this is fabulous get-away spot all year 'round.

Featured Recipe - Homemade Strawberry-Topped Waffles

As the strawberries ripen in the spring sunshine, the date for picking grows nearer. How about going strawberry-picking while you are here? Watch our local newspapers for announcements from farmer's markets and farms. Strawberries have more vitamin C in them than oranges do, so let strawberries put the fun and nutrition back into breakfast. Visit the beach and make this yummy breakfast using just-picked strawberries from our local area farms.

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, washed and hulled
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest

Preparation:
  • Slice strawberries in 1/4-inch slices and place in mixing bowl.
  • In a saucepan combine sugar, orange juice and orange zest; bring to a boil over medium heat. Dissolve the sugar using a wooden spoon, stirring constantly.
  • Once the syrup is at a rolling boil, remove from heat and pour over sliced strawberries. Let sit while cooking waffles. Serve over waffles.

Waffle Recipe Ingredients::

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs, separated
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Waffle Instructions:
  • Heat waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Sift flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  • In a second bowl, use a wooden spoon to beat together egg yolks and sugar until sugar is dissolved and eggs have turned a pale yellow.
  • Add milk, melted butter and vanilla to eggs and whisk to combine.
  • Add flour mixture to egg-milk mixture and whisk just until blended . Do not over mix.
  • In a third bowl, beat egg whites with an electric mixer until soft peaks form, about 1 minute.
  • Using a rubber spatula, gently fold egg whites into waffle batter. Don't over mix!
  • Coat waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray if required and pour enough batter in the iron to just cover waffle grid.
  • Close and cook as per manufacturer's instructions until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes). Remove cooked waffle with tongs or fork. Serve with the warm strawberry topping.

Preparing for Summer Arrivals

At Horizon the hard-working Engineering and Housekeeping staff have all been preparing for the even busier warm-weather season ahead.

Interior refurbishment has been going on at Horizon non-stop for weeks now. Painting of all baseboards and chair railing in hallways is now complete, and all of the storage room doors also wear a fresh coat of paint. To add to the property's fresh springy appeal, the corridor carpeting has also been cleaned.

Outside, the spring overhaul of the landscape has begun to take shape. Bedding plants, annuals and perennials, flowering and evergreen, have been arriving by the truck-load and are being planted. As their roots take hold, the maturing plants will begin to send forth gorgeous blossoms full of vibrant color. Look for plenty of hibiscus and other flowers.

Golf for Mothers

Let's face it. How often are you offered something for free, something such as a round of golf a one of 30 of the area's most desirable golf courses? Free!

So, when people began seeing the announcement in our web site about mothers playing for free on Mother's Day, that started people talking:
  • Fabulous Mother's Day gift
  • Great opportunity to bring the whole family together
  • Perfect for celebrating mom when some or all of the offspring cannot actually be with her
  • Something that even people who might not golf very often will enjoy because they can get out of doors and spend time with loved ones
On participating courses here in the Grand Strand, 30 of the area's finest golf courses, all mothers who live outside Horry, Georgetown, and Brunswick counties are provided a complimentary round of golf if booked through a participating golf provider.

Availability is limited for this wonderful opportunity to show the mother in your life how special she is, so click here to make your reservation or call 877.581.0815. Our Golf Department can help you find the tee time just right for you.

Our guests' words offer the best view of how things here are going when they stay here. We rely on their feedback to maintain what people want and to find what will make vacations even better. Here are some of the recent statements from people staying with us:

I cannot say enough good things about Horizon. The staff bent over backwards to make our stay enjoyable. We needed a few extra things in the kitchen and received them right away. My daughter got strep throat while on the trip, and at 3:00 in the morning, the security guard walked us to our car and gave us (great) directions. We enjoyed the outdoor pool, whirlpool and lazy river. There was an indoor pool and whirlpool too, which we never used. We were not on the Ocean, but had a great view of it, and it only took 2 minutes to reach the beach once we walked out our condo. Horizon's sister hotel, Grand Shores, sits between the Horizon and the Ocean, which by the way, is open to the Horizon guests. You can use their pool, they have a cookout on the grill at lunchtime everyday by the pool and there is a restaurant there, which has a Happy Hour.special. The only thing I would recommend is bringing your own dish towels and cloths and most definitely your own pillows. All of Myrtle Beach was wonderful, but Horizon is in the "Very Good" side of town. There is tons to do and see. The condo was roomy and comfortable. We would recommend Horizon for sure! Oh, and I do like that in the evening, you have to show your parking permit to the security guard to enter the parking garage under the Horizon.

We stayed here for spring break a couple of weeks ago. We came all the way from Indiana with my husband, daughter, mother, and myself. I loved the place. We liked it so much and had such a good time [that] we've booked a week in June and [are] coming back with my mother-in-law. Can't wait I'm so excited. Keep up the good work!

This was our first time staying at the Horizon but it certainly won't be our last. We had such a wonderful time during our 2 months stay that we have booked next year for 3 months. There are so many wonderful things we could say it's hard to know where to begin. Our rooms were clean and spotless thanks to the great cleaning staff. At the front desk we were greeted with a happy smile and cheerful word every time we met Valerie . She sure is an asset to your organization. We also met many lovely people and developed good friendships especially through the Friday night Karaoke. We are very much looking forward to our next visit to the Horizon . Many thanks!

Just wanted to recognize one of your employees on my recent stay. Iris was absolutely wonderful! Not only on the phone when I called to confirm my reservation but at check-in she was very detailed about everything that Horizon had to offer. I am a frequent visitor to the Horizon and rarely see the same front desk attendants twice. I hope to see her again. Her smile and enthusiasm are refreshing.
