February 2010, Volume 3, Issue 2

Though winter has a strong grip in some areas of the country, here in the South we see hope of spring just around the corner.

Recently, our published announcements of fantastic discounts have stirred some growth from deep within their places of hibernation. Some people are even beginning to ponder warm weather and what they can do with it - sun bathing, bouncing on the warm waves on a bright spring afternoon, driving a white golf ball down a green fairway, sipping a cool beverage beside the sparkling blue pool. Reservations have been coming in from people planning golf outings, spring breaks, and summer vacations. What a way to add a little comfort to an otherwise dreary February and March - anticipation of relaxing at the beach in the South Carolina sunshine!

Hard working staff at Horizon have prepared our resort inside and out for your arrival. As the sun nudges tiny green shoots from their underground hideaways, landscapes will soon sparkle with colorful flowers and bright green growth, prepared by our landscaping team. Nearby, the Shoreline Café has been ongoing in its improvements and upgrades through the winter, too, and you will enjoy seeing our refreshing outlook, thanks to the demanding work of many on the Engineering staff.

Planning golf tee times is another way to think "spring." Preferred rates, premier courses, and an abundance of fun are in store for the golf groups staying with us now and booked through the spring. Our online booking system through http://www.ttimesonly.com/ is streamlined, your "one-stop shop" for arranging golf outings!

Meanwhile, during the chilly days of December through February, Horizon's winter guests have enjoyed day trips, potluck suppers, games, movie-night, and other get-together. We will surely miss you all when you depart for your northern residences, and we look forward to seeing you again soon. How quickly winter seems to fly by while we have been busy with preparations for summer and enjoying our extended "snowbird" family.

So, with the warming weather, here along the Strand, won't you come join us for a weekend or longer! Come have fun at the beach!

What is Going on at Horizon

What a Team! - From training sessions to renovations in the Shoreline Café, many aspects of our Food and Beverage services have been brightened and freshened in time for your arrival! Rave reviews are already coming in from guests and other staff members as they experience the results, and with the hard work from our Engineering department to spruce up the restaurant next door, we are ready for your arrival. Felix Maya, Jimmy Perez (shown below), and others worked long and hard to meet deadlines and expectations to renovate the café so that you can enjoy the delicious dishes prepared by the chef and staff, led by Jeannie Pearson, Director of Food and Beverages. Well done, teams! We are growing better with each effort, each event presented here at Horizon.

Snow and then Sun - We had a short visit from the frosty fingers of Old Man Winter on Valentine's weekend, of all occasions! Overnight on February 12th and 13th, snow began falling around 8 PM and continued through the night, building to several inches by daybreak. Now, to those of you in the Washington, DC, area and beyond, we understand that a few inches is barely a dusting compared with your 50 inches which has fallen over the past month or so. However, here in the deep South, snow is more of a phenomenon than an adversity. For several hours around the Grand Strand, we watched as snowmen popped up, children made snow angels, and amateur photographers ventured forth everywhere. By noon, though, the sun had returned, the snow had melted, and the beach community was enjoying its warmth again!

Your Golf Options at Horizon

With the hard winter, many people who enjoy golfing in the spring have not had a chance to get out there and explore first-hand all those golf courses that we read about in leading golf publications. Some of the best deals, though, have booking deadlines, so we wanted to let you know through this newsletter that accommodations and tee times can get filled up quickly. Many options still remain, awaiting your call.

Our golf department's experts know these great courses by personal experience and also have knowledge of the high-value discount packages to offer you as our exclusive guest here at Horizon. Booking is easy through our web site and by phone, and finding the right golf courses just for your skill level and interests with desirable tee times is even easier.

Need help with arrangements for a rental car during your stay here? Our agents can assist you with all of that, too, plus accommodations, of course, right here at the beach. With the spring golf season warming up faster than the spring growing season, making reservations early is the best way to assure that you get what you want. Featured Recipe - Heirloom Baked Apple Butterscotch Pudding

A ancient recipe uncovered in Pompeii for a celery dessert called for roasting chopped celery in an oven and serving it with honey and ground pepper.

While you decide whether to try that, consider this more classic pudding recipe, always a favorite during winter gatherings. Whether baked, steamed, or simmered, puddings seem to disappear quickly when the weather outside is frightful.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/3 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cups sliced apples mixed with 1/3 cup brown sugar

Directions:

  • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup brown sugar, and cornstarch, 1/4 cup butter.
  • Stir in 1 cup water.
  • Cook over low heat until thickened.
  • Pour mixture into a lightly buttered 10x6-inch baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, combine sifted flour, baking powder, salt, and 2/3 cup brown sugar.
  • Blend in 1/4 cup butter and the 1/2 cup milk, stirring just until dampened.
  • Stir in the sliced apples with 1/3 cup brown sugar.
  • Pour the apple batter over the syrup mixture in baking dish.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.

Fun Facts -

The human brain uses about 20% of the energy of the body. All of your thinking is done by electricity and chemicals up there in your "attic." If you could harness that power, you could provide light to a 10 -23 watt light bulb.

Despite how it feels when you ARE in pain, your brain is not the source of pain when you have a headache. Your brain is without pain receptors and so cannot feel pain.

In Britain, eggplant is called "aubergine," the same term as in French. In South African English and in Indian English, it is called "brinjal." The Italians call it "melanzane," meaning "crazy apple." It is called "eggplant" in the United States, Canada, and Australia because the first eggplants in those countries were purely ornamental and featured egg-shaped white and yellow fruit. Today this variety of eggplant is called "White Egg."

Eggplant is native to southern India and Sri Lanka.

An eggplant is almost 95% water and was originally bitter. You might recall that your grandmother salted it prior to cooking to reduce the amount of oil absorbed during cooking. The act of salting and rinsing eggplant to reduce bitterness is called "degorging," not used much these days because modern eggplants have been bred to be less bitter.

Brussels sprouts are native to northern Europe, and in the U. S. most of our production comes from California. Other top Brussels sprout producers include Canada, The Netherlands, England, and Germany.

One cup of Brussels sprouts contains 1,122 IU of Vitamin A.

Celery was first introduced to America in 1856 when a Scotsman named George Taylor brought celery to Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Of the rarest of U S postage stamps, there are more than 10 stamps for which there is only one known copy.

In the early 20th century, the price of a stamp was 3 cnets during the war emergency. Today's 44 cents stamp takes a half-ounce letter as far as across the country or to the office only a few feet away. In 1845 postage stamps were priced according to how far the piece of mail was expected to travel: Under 300 miles, per 1/2 oz = 5 cents; over 300 miles, per 1/2 oz = 10 cents.

Long ago, people thought that they had control over their luck. They believed that they could bring good luck to themselves by doing certain things on January 1st - wearing certain clothing or eating certain foods. They celebrated the first few minutes of the new year with great joy. Gradually, this festive spirit lengthened to become an all-night party

How is YOUR year going so far? Either way, we can make it better here at the beach!

I have stayed at this hotel many times, and we always have a good time and recommend it to friends and family. I love the pools and two lazy rivers ...I will continue staying with your hotel; see you this summer. Thanks.

Everything was great! This was our 3rd visit to your hotel. We stayed last January and May and this January. WE WILL BE BACK and will bring other family members with us. I visited the 2 and 3 bedroom units before leaving and was very impressed. Plenty of room in these units for everyone to have their own corner. I do appreciate the price structure during the winter months. The hotel is conveniently located to all the places we visit while in Myrtle Beach. Hope to see you for a long weekend in November.

I usually don't write reviews although I do rely on them when choosing a hotel. Since this hotel received great reviews, and many helpful people posted pics, I decided to try it. It was definitely all that I expected and more. First I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and modern it was. Most of the materials used to build and decorate this condo were top-notch. I loved the view. I almost didn't book it because it was not ocean front, and I was a little disappointed that I was given a second floor room, but when I looked over the balcony, I still had a wonderful view of the ocean and the sun rise. My favorite thing about the room was the jetted tub. I took several baths in it, and it was excellent.

I really liked the Horizon; it was in a good location away from the ... motels down the opposite end of the beach. I stayed on the 5th floor, had ocean view, and the room was very clean, modern. You could live there. I recommend it!

Networking Possibilities at Horizon

Networking comes in all sizes and shapes, from hand-written letters to phone conversations to casual chats by the pool to email. Some social networking services that we use to send out the word to our subscribing guests and friends about great savings are SMS, Facebook, and Twitter.

SMS or "short message service" provides a valuable means of staying in touch with loved ones and others interested in the same things that we are. Here at Horizon, we use it as a tool to send out information about our much-appreciated discounts, some of them so last-minute that we do not want you, our preferred guests, to miss them.

Did you know that by texting the word B E A C H to 85700, you can use SMS to link to this means of saving money for your mini-vacations and summer getaways? The extra bonus is that you are automatically entered into our 2010 Sweepstakes drawing for a 3-day/2-night vacation!

Facebook is a different type of networking system but just as effective. Like SMS, this also puts you in touch with our discounts and much more, plus you can use it with your friends and family to share news and photos. By being our "friend" in Facebook, you stay in touch with our news, our specials, our price discounts, in fact any of our great and sometimes spur-of-the-moment deals and events. At Horizon's homepage, note the icons at the bottom, linking you to both of these services.

If you are not sure about either of these great tools, just give a call to our Reservations agents who can help you find your closest path to the beach!

Spring is on its way to the beach! Come join us for what we expect to be a wonderful 2010!
