January 2010, Volume 3, Issue 1

Welcome to 2010,

Perhaps it is the nip in the air, especially during the first few weeks of January mixed with our eagerness to see all the shining, smiling faces arrive during the spring and summer. Our energy level here at Horizon is high as we prepare your vacation condominium on the beach!

As part of getting your rooms ready, checking your water amenities to be sure everything is just right, and making certain that the many other leisure facilities available here at the resort are in place for your arrival, we are staying quite busy. Of course, some of you are already here, enjoying your months in the sun away from the snow and ice back at home. Others are planning your mid-winter weekend getaways, spring breaks, and summer vacations using our great pricing deals going out now to save you money. If you have not already received notice of our pre-season discounts, just let us know where to send them by email.

Among the painting, raking, carpet-cleaning, polishing, sweeping, and washing going on here inside and out, we have customer service training to fine-tune our abilities to serve you better. Richard MacGregor, Food and Beverage Manager from one of our sister properties, has been on site recently offering ways to improve banquet functions. Erin Ciccone has been transferred from front desk at a sister property to our Group Sales office to help coordinate and organize group stays. The Golf Department has been announcing fabulous deals such as the "Terrific Tuesday" package for individuals and golf groups who love our late winter and spring weather. All are hard at work to ensure that this year, 2010, your vacation is the best one that you have ever enjoyed!

Additionally, Horizon is proud to have been chosen as a "preferred accommodation" for The Ripken Experience, for their visiting customer service. The Ripken Experience with its youth fields and two regulation diamonds sees much activity in visiting athletes through the year. We are extremely pleased to be recognized as one of their sought-after resorts and especially happy that our staff is being acclaimed as part of the reason for our success. Good work, everyone!

Featured Recipe - Ultimate Cold Weather Soup for Low Budgets
This recipe comes from a contributor to FoodBuzz.com. As with many good recipes, it is the combination of flavors that makes this soup so tasty. The soup is filling, warming, and inexpensive (under $2 per serving).

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 4 Italian turkey sausage links (If no sausage, used cooked chicken instead.)
  • 2 cans dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups of veggie combination in equal proportions
    (diced carrots, celery, onion)
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped Roma tomatoes
  • 2 medium Russet potatoes, diced
  • 2 large cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seed (ok to omit if unavailable, but better with a substitute could be a 1/4 teaspoon of anise flavored liqueurs)

Directions:

  • In a large soup pot heat the olive oil and garlic over medium high heat until the garlic becomes fragrant.
  • Remove the sausages from their casings and cook them with the olive oil and garlic, seasoning with the salt, pepper and all the herbs.
  • Cook the sausage until it barely begins to brown, then add the diced potatoes.
  • Continue cooking until the potatoes begin to soften then add the veggie combination, cooking for another 2 minutes or so.
  • Add the broth and bring to a low boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the tomatoes and the beans and simmer for another 5-7 minutes.
  • Check for taste. Season and adjust accordingly (might need some extra pepper at this point).
  • Serve generous amounts of soup in large bowls or mugs with plenty of crusty bread (and a glass of red wine, perhaps). Enjoy!

New Year's Eve with the Vintage Club

Once again this year, the delightful and energetic Vintage Club joined us to celebrate New Year's Eve. These traveling friends, shown here, get together here at the beach every year at this time, converging from their homes farther to the north to share stories, meet new friends, and rekindle relationships.

Vintage Club, once again our hearty well-wishes for a fabulous New Year. We salute you and look forward to your visits!

Horizon Recognizes George Thompson, Pool Manager

Horizon has named George Thompson as Employee of the Month. Having been with Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts since the 77th Street property opened, George Thompson knows all the intricacies of the pools, lazy rivers, and hot tubs.

Back in 1985, George thought he was coming to Myrtle Beach simply to relax after a long career with an Ohio company called LTV Steel, but his strong work ethic drew him into a number of endeavors that developed to his position today with Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts. After he bought a home in Surfside and dabbled in landscaping to stay busy, his work evolved into pool repairs which broadened to pool maintenance, taking care of all the water amenities at Horizon and its adjacent sister property. Today, certified as "CPO," in pool maintenance, he is in high demand to ensure that, especially during the high-use months of spring, summer, and fall, those marvelous water amenities that everyone enjoys stay in tip-top shape!

With one son in Florida and another still in Ohio, George enjoys spending his leisure time with grandchildren and talking about Ohio sports with his grown children. His beach location puts him in a prime location for after-work-hours fishing. No problem just wandering down to the shore, tossing out a line, and relaxing at seaside. Good job, George!

Save money on skin therapy by adding a drop of olive oil and lemon juice to an ice cube, then running it over your face - great facial treatment for very little effort.

A pound of potato chips weighs less but costs 200 times more money than does a pound of raw potatoes. A 1-pound bag of potato chips also has many calories and follows with lots of work for the consumer to remove those calories from hips and thighs. How expensive is that!

Summertime 2009 in the U. S. was cooler than average. Here in the Carolinas, our average January temperature runs around 37 degrees (compare that with today's 20's). In 1985, the temperature dipped to 4 degrees, a most unusual occurrence indeed, so perhaps that recent round of 20's does not seem so bad after all.

The largest snowflake on record anywhere measured 38 centimeters (approximately 15 inches) in diameter, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It fell on a ranch in Montana where the farmer said that flakes appeared larger than milk pans.

The air is never too cold for snow because moisture can exist even at the lowest temperatures. However, most snowfalls occur when the air is -9 C or warmer (about 15 degrees F) since air can hold more water vapor during warmer temperatures.

Snow makes things quieter because the air pockets in fresh snow absorb and trap sound waves. Ambient noise returns when surface snow hardens and begins to reflect more sound. Where hardened snow or ice appears, more noise can travel farther.

No snow is forecast in the Carolinas, so bring golf clubs, flip-flops for shoreline walks, and a craving for lots of fresh air and sunshine. We are here for you.
Guest Comments

When guests send us their reactions to staying with us here at the beach, not only do we enjoy hearing from them, but we need to know what they are thinking so that we can continue to have the features that they enjoy and explore other ways when something needs improvement. Let us hear from you, too.

Here are some of the guest comments that we have received over the past several months:

This was the most fabulous resort that I've stayed in at Myrtle Beach. The price, especially the AAA rate, was amazing for the quality of the resort. I would have stayed for a week, had it been in the budget. I just hope that you all keep up the appearance of your resort, unlike other resorts that I've been too. Don't get slack on the cleanliness and the maintenance of the overall property.

We (8 of us) stayed at Horizon and Grande Shores, 1 week each. What a wonderful experience! Both condos were great, with service, food, and location also great. One person made it special: Jenna Hillman. My family and I are frequent visitors to Myrtle [Beach], and I will make it a point always to stay on your properties.

My wife and I went to The Horizon for our honeymoon! The beds are so comfortable, and the service was amazing! Great place for a honeymoon! They changed everything instantly, and they helped with everything it was surely a great time.

We stayed at the Horizon for a leadership Conference. This was our first year and we can not wait to get back. The venue was beautiful, the service was excellent special mention to Breanne that helped with all the arrangements. We had been staying at the Grand Shores resort and made the switch to the Horizon. Both locations are wonderful. Our church was excited at the idea of staying at the hotel.
