June 2009, Volume 2, Issue 6

Greetings from the Beach, Friends

Coming to Horizon this summer is a way to escape into the delights of summer 2009, to find interesting things to do at poolside, to kick off your shoes and your own personal reconstruction project after the challenges of the last 12 months. Lie back on the beach or take a sunset sailing cruise! Relax with a spa treatment or go fishing with your kids! Let this be YOUR summer, after all.

As we near the July 4th holiday, give some thought to how you plan to spend it. One of the best possible ways of de-stressing is to do nothing at all except arranging reservations here for our Independence Day party. We'll take care of the rest, so no hassle about food preparation or arrangements for entertainment and fireworks. We have it all right here at 77th Avenue.

Whenever you arrive this summer, we hope that you will take note of the long list of activities for any guest ages 5 and above. From arts and crafts to water and beach sports to fitness activities, summer is just better with options in fun and entertainment! Ask the front desk at check-in for the printed Activities Schedule.

The Grand Strand area also offers a wider than usual list of things to see and do this year, from the newly opened Freestyle Music Park to new shopping and entertainment sites such as the outdoor friendly Market Common. Many discounts are available, too, so this is THE year for summer activities at the beach! Our especially attractive rates, unique to this unique year, can perk up your budget, too. Contact us online or through our reservation agents for the latest in specials and amazing offers.

Featured Employees - Some of Our Best Faces Brought Forward

Our employees on the Horizon team are pleased to help guests with their vacation needs. Here are some of the faces that you might see around the resort.

Kaylee Maxey works as a front desk agent. Poised and self-confident, she came to us from the Myrtle Beach hotel industry with experience and a flair for customer service. Her service here has been delightful and dependable, with a smile for everyone. We are fortunate that she is here, especially during this busy summer season.

Even though she is new to Horizon, she is quite knowledgeable about the Grand Strand and our area's attractions and can help you customize your stay to make this the best summer vacation you have ever had!

Congratulations to George Thompson who has been cleaning our pools for over 20 years. George knows pools, and we thank him for his good work. Great job, George!

Here, he is pictured with Noemi Diaz who on the grounds crew, modeling one of the new uniforms.

Say, don't these new uniforms on the grounds crew look clean, neat, and professional! Here are Felix Maya, Noemi Diaz, and Heriberto G mez, just some of the hard-working team who keep our landscaping neat and green! The team reports that these garments are comfortable, too, light and well-ventilated to keep skin cool in summer's heat and humidity.

We bid "goodbye" to Anastassia Stoenelova (shown on the right of the photo), one of the international interns. She provided valuable services, helping everyone from the front desk to pool-deck, and the guests loved her.

We say "hello" to our new golf specialist, Danielle Duncan (shown on the left of the photo), who can provide guests with information about the area's courses and golf-related information.

Featured Recipe - Layered Fresh Fruit Dessert Dip

Preparation takes about 20 minutes and yields about 6 servings.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature [alternative: fat free vanilla yogurt is equally tasty and lower in calories and fat]
  • 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup brown granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup strawberry preserves
  • 3/4 cup crushed vanilla wafers*
  • Whole fresh strawberries
  • Apple slices (1 apple)
  • Pear slices (1 firm ripe pear)
  • Chocolate shavings

* To make vanilla wafer crumbs, place the cookies in a zip-top plastic bag, seal, and use a rolling pin to crush the cookies in the bag until you have the degree of crumble that you want.

Directions:

  • Place softened cream cheese in a mixer with a paddle attachment and cream on low until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add the sour cream, orange juice, and zest. Mix until smooth and well blended. Stop the machine and scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula. Stir in the sugar until combined.
  • Spread the cream cheese mixture into the bottom of a square, glass 9-inch pie plate (or an 8x8 inch baking dish). Warm the strawberry preserves slightly in the microwave and then dollop them over the cream cheese mixture, spreading the preserves evenly. (Try not to mix the strawberry preserves into the cream cheese mixture.)
  • Sprinkle most of the vanilla wafer cookie crumbles evenly across the top of the strawberry preserves. Top with fresh slices of strawberries, apples, pears. Then sprinkle with more crushed wafers and add the chocolate shavings.
  • Serve immediately. Use either the wafer cookies or even fruit wedges as dippers, or try using a spoon. Either way, delicious!.

Hi, we just left The Horizon at 77th last week, and we hated to go. We are in our late 30's and have 4 children ages 12 years-16 months. It was the perfect vacation for us! We usually take 2 or 3 beach vacations a year if financially possibly, and fourteen years of marriage, this vacation ranks at the very top! We were pleased with the beautifully appointed room, the very clean and nice lazy river and pools, and loved the location. It was restful, and yet we were so close to so many restaurants and attractions that we could do anything we wanted with very little effort. Thanks for a great stay! We will be back this summer and many times after. You have a loyal customer in the Boswell family, and we have told everyone we've met about The Horizon at 77th.

[In our May 2009 stay]the rooms were absolutely beautiful and had fantastic views in spite of not being directly on the ocean. The balcony space was also spectacular. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have a great time on vacation!!!

Everything [in this May 2009 stay] was wonderful. There is not one thing that I can complain about. The room was very clean; the staff was very polite and helpful. My kids loved the pools and the room. On my next trip back to SC, this is definitely where I am going to stay. Email on TripAdvisor.com from a family with young children, June 2, 2009.

My husband and I stayed at Horizon the first week of May, and it was great! The hotel amenities were just wonderful for the kids. The view was just amazing, room was clean, and the staff went well above and beyond. [For example,] I had a problem with my sink in the kitchen. It was probably my fault for not cleaning out the dishes [well] enough, but it was stopped up. I was very hesitant to call the front desk and request for someone to repair my mess, but I had to. I had called the front desk and talked to a young lady and requested that some one from the Maintenance come and take a look at my sink. The repair man only took 5 minutes to get there. He had [the clog] repaired in no time at all. I tried to tip the gentleman, and he absolutely would not take [the tip.] He said, "Ma'm, I am just doing my job to make your stay enjoyable," or something in that nature. I was just astonished by this act of kindness and customer service, but, to top things off, later on in the afternoon I got a call from someone making sure the problem with the sink had been taken care of. She was very thoughtful, courteous, professional, and personable. Overall for your staff I give them all KUDOS. Thank you for a wonderful stay. My husband, kids, and I will be back soon.

Stayed at The Horizon from May 15 - 21, 2009, and enjoyed a two bed, two bath unit on [the] 2nd floor. Visited Myrtle Beach for the 1st time to attend Bike Week and play 3 rounds of golf. Enjoyed our stay and found plenty of things to do in the area. Would most certainly return for another visit and stay at the Horizon again. The only negative was the cold weather at the time we visited.

Fun Facts

America loves flip-flops. Called "jandals" or "slippers" in other cultures, they have existed for over 6,000 years. The ancient Egyptians wore them as a sign of royalty and privilege, sometimes adorned with jewels. The pharaohs wore a version slightly turned up.

The Japanese version of flip-flops were normal year-round footwear called the "zori," developed to teach children how to walk.

Flip flops have evolved into fashion statements for all occasions with dressier versions called the British Havaianas with gold studs on them. Others have leather and suede, decorated with jewels. Hollywood's stars and supermodels are seen wearing the dressier flip-flops to premier "red-carpet" events, and brides even wear them at their weddings.

Over 4,000 varieties of crabs exist in the world. The average crab lives only about 3 years, usually in estuaries along the coastline. They prefer the brackish water (a mixture of salt and fresh water).

A crab's "teeth" are in his stomach.

Seaweed is a rootless plant that floats freely or clings to rocks. It photosynthesizes the sunlight that reaches it through shallow water, absorbing nutrients from seawater through its leaves. The temperature and nutrients of the ocean water have a lot to do with what kind of seaweed grows where.

Giant kelp, a kind of seaweed that grows in the Pacific, can grow about 60 centimeters (almost 2 feet) a day.

Tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable, with a lot of vitamin C and vitamin A. Its nutrients are found in the skin and not in the juicy seeds.

We take weather for granted as just happening, but what is it? Wet air is lighter than dry air, and warm air, which weighs less than cool air, rises. Cool air moves in and replaces the rising warm air. All this movement (wind) is part of weather.

Lightning is 5 times hotter then the surface of the sun.

The tiny droplets of water that make up fog are so small that it would take seven thousand million of them to make a single tablespoonful of water.

Sunbathing on sunny days with clouds in the sky can be dangerous.

Cloud droplets are extremely small. They are about ten thousandth of an inch across, a thousand times smaller than a raindrop.

Clouds can reflect so much ultraviolet light from the sunlight they dramatically increase the ultraviolet reaching the ground.
