October 2009, Volume 2, Issue 10

Greetings from the Beach, Friends

Not only is the ocean air crisper at this time of year, the sky bluer, and the sounds of passing migratory birds more noticeable, fall also features rich aromas of spices used in cooking fall treats, aging leaves underfoot, and farm produce harvested and ready for eating.

What a sense-filling time of year - Autumn at the beach!

Anyone who believes that beach excitement ends with the passing of summer has not experienced our other seasons. Certainly things to do are plentiful at any time of year. Golf in autumn is only one of the reasons why people come to the Grand Strand in the fall. Our expert golf department has arranged some exciting packages that inspire golfers to take time off of whatever they were doing to enjoy a week's golf outing.

Visitors from northern areas appreciate our many and varied activities, friendly smiles, and home-away-from-home, all ready here and now just for you! So, come on down, all of you who want to escape snow, sleet, and impossibly cold temperatures for several months (already begun in places). You told us last year and in years passed what leisure pursuits you enjoy, and we listened, so once again we have your favorites, plus much more, all prepared for you: movie night, casino cruises, pot-luck dinners, game night, bingo challenges, lots of golf and mini-golf. We hope that you will come here for the winter and join in the fun!

The word is out that many people want to celebrate the end of 2009 a bit early, starting at Thanksgiving with a beach holiday. Check out our holiday specials for a whole host of ways to relax at the beach during these next several months, even saving money with package deals.

To all who visited us over the past several months, we want to thank you again for choosing Horizon at 77th, and we hope that we can see you again soon!

Hoping to see you soon back here at the beach!

Your Friends at The Horizon at 77th

Who Is Managing the Front Desk? Jenna Hillman!

Jenna has been with the company since September of 2002, enjoying her work and learning new skills. Her early days with the company, spent as part-time night auditor, serve her well in her current job as Front Desk Manager. Some favorite aspects of her position include meeting new guests and welcoming back the returning guests, especially the ones who over-winter with us. When long-term guests stay, they get to know everyone and form lasting friendships; Jenna is one they look forward to greeting each year.

With the arrival of October, Horizon is beginning to receive long-term guests as they return to us for the winter. Jenna and her staff are making sure that the new arrivals know about planned events for them, plus any new features as they occur. One of the key reasons why people enjoy returning to Myrtle Beach each year is our variety of things to see and do, always changing and always fresh. One key to Jenna's success is that she stays in tune with what our guests want, from external interests to features of our resort.

This year, an added aspect to Jenna's responsibilities has been training new staff members and interns from the American Hospitality Association, also cross-training a student working in Housekeeping who intends to return to us next season.

Team work has been another of Jenna's pleasures in working with the company, in particular with the company charity, Relay for Life, a part of American Cancer Society. Jenna shared her energies and team spirit with staff members and guests who helped raise the grand total of $6060.00 for this charity over the past six months.

"I have a close group of friends here in Myrtle Beach," said Jenna. "My family is scattered all over the United States, and home is Michigan, so my Myrtle Beach friends are 'family' away from home."

Featured Employee - Barbara Escobar

Meet Barbara Escobar, originally from Temascalcigo, Mexico, and now from Myrtle Beach. She began her employment here in 2001 at one of our sister properties, working in the Housekeeping Department as Housekeeper. With hard work and dedication, she grew in the position to be promoted to Supervisor, a position she held successfully for 5 1/2 years until she transferred to the Engineering Department. There, she has been working as a technician and weekend dispatcher when not involved with the many other aspects of her job.

Barbara's strong sense of responsibility and dedication to her team are only two of the many assets that she brings to her job. Assisting groundsmen, spraying pools early in the morning, and generally being available and willing to help on anything needed in the department all contribute to make her a valuable employee. Some of her specialties include working with wallpaper, re-caulking bathtubs with extraordinary care and detail, and providing a professional "finish" to all her jobs - on time and on the goal.

Thanks, Barbara, for your hard work and dedication to the organization and to its guests!

Featured Recipe - Sweet and Spicy Pumpkin Seed Brittle

Serve this at a football party, but don't tell them that what they are eating is nutritious! This is tasty and snappy and delicious - perfect for any event.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of pumpkin seeds ("pepitas" - unshelled, unsalted, raw pumpkin seeds)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

Directions:
  • Place 2 large sheets of parchment paper (baking-sheet sized) side by side on a flat surface. Have a rolling pin and a third and fourth sheet of parchment paper in reserve nearby.

  • In a heavy pan, bring the sugar, salt, and water to a boil, slowly stirring in the sugar until all of it dissolves.

  • Lower the heat and cook without stirring until the temperature reaches the softball stage (238 degrees).

  • Remove the mixture from the heat.

  • Stir in the pepitas and chipotle pepper, stirring about 4 minutes or until the sugar crystallizes.

  • Return the mixture to the heat and stir continuously until the sugar melts again (it might appear to further crystallize before it melts again). The mixture will turn to a dark brown color.

  • Remove from the heat and pour immediately onto the parchment paper, placing the extra sheets of paper on top of the brittle to cool it completely.

  • When cool, remove the parchment paper and break the sheets into pieces.

  • Store in room / cool temperature.

Truth be told, I can't think of anything [to make our stay any better.] Although the check in on 1st floor confused me a bit, I wouldn't change anything [and would] choose Horizon again. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to being a repeat customer for every Myrtle Beach trip in September.

Thanks for the newsletter...although [it] makes [me] really wish we were back at the Horizon and Myrtle Beach as a whole. As I read the note about the duck derby, I was sorry I didn't participate, but did not hear one word about it while we were there. We were there the last week of August. Next year we will be sure to participate.

We are looking forward to coming back soon and we have recommended this property to everyone we know who wants to visit Myrtle Beach! Thank you for an enjoyable, memorable time! We appreciate it!

Fun Facts

Tides are not caused by the direct pull of the moon's gravity. The moon is pulling upwards on the water while the earth is pulling downward, so the slight advantage of the moon's pull creates tides.

Whenever the moon, earth and sun are aligned, the gravitational pull of the sun adds to that of the moon causing maximum tides.

A tidal inlet is a narrow channel connecting the open sea with a lagoon, sometimes with a small delta (a triangular sand bar and soil at the mouth of a river or inlet) at each end of the inlet. This build-up of material comes from the high-speed tidal currents flowing through the channels.

Deep out in the ocean, the difference in tidal height is usually less than 1.6 feet, but toward the shore the surf swells with the tide. Bays and estuaries have an even more dramatic tidal effect (Canada's Bay of Fundy has a tidal range of nearly 45 feet).

Tidal changes do not occur at the same time each day because the moon moves around the earth, but at the same time each day the moon is not always in the same place above earth. Each day, the times for high and low tides change by 50 minutes.

Spring tides are the highest and the lowest of the tides.

Tidal pools are the mid zone between high and low tide. Out-going tide leaves water in low spots on its way out to sea. These same spots drain slowly when exposed to air, sun, and gravity, and they fill up again when the in-coming tide fills them with water. Animal and plant life living in these mid zones rely on the sea to protect them because, when the tide is low, they are at their most vulnerable point.

Animals living successfully in these tidal pools have adapted to the ever-changing conditions–sea snails and mussels (shells protect them in low tide), purple sea urchins (retain water inside their shells), seaweed (exposed upper layers shield lower layers from light, heat, and cold).

Large lakes usually do not experience tidal pulls. Being smaller than oceans and seas, large lakes are still located about the same distance from the moon (the same pull at each end of the lake), so no tide.
