October 2008, Volume 1, Issue 3

Greetings from the Beach, Friends

Despite the departure of summer, the autumn sun glistens brightly over the golf courses, the beaches, and the shopping malls of the Grand Strand. We say farewell to traditional "beach" season and greetings to prime "golf" season, but that certainly does not mean that people are avoiding the surf. On the contrary, a glance up and down the shoreline illustrates just how popular the October beach is -- people in bathing suits soaking up rays, diving and splashing among the waves, strolling the "renourished" sands looking for deep-water shells. So, if you think that the days after Labor Day mean a still-life scene at the beach, come see for yourself!

Fall festivals are busily getting under way. Almost any country lane around the area on any given weekend features something going on. Last weekend visitors enjoyed Indigo Farm's Farm Heritage Day or stopped in to view a high school football game or car-wash fund-raiser. Both the Little River Shrimp Festival, October 11-12, and North Carolina's Oyster Festival on October 18-19 are only a few of the events on people's calendars.

Until then,

Your Friends at The Horizon at 77th

Bikers' Fall Pilgrimage to the Grand Strand, October 1-5

Our beautiful blue Carolina sky, low humidity, and moderate temperatures provided a comfortable and satisfying environment for motorcycle enthusiasts to ride into the Grand Strand this past weekend. Due to changes in Myrtle Beach laws, events had been moved from traditional venues to outlying areas such as Surfside and North Myrtle Beach, but even with these and some city ordinance changes, bikers on the whole tended to have a their usual good time.

Myrtle Beach City Spokesman Mark Kruea said the city's new laws are not meant to target specific bikers, but only to control crowds during the various rallies. "It was a challenging summer with the economy down and gas [prices] up." As the nation's economic challenges continue into fall, this particular rally saw their number of vendors drop by 22% from last year's figure. Reportedly, the number of rally attendees went down, though actual numbers have not been released yet. "Many bikers tried to ride quieter," Kruea said. "I think it was less than more. We appreciate that they watched the noise and tried to control it."

For the spring bike rally in May 2009, the City of Myrtle Beach will not issue vendor permits, but the rally organizers plan to arrange the rally around the city with events and vendors outside the city limits. Attracting people from far and near, from all levels of the economy, the Myrtle Beach Bike Week in May 2009 will move forward into a new era, perhaps different from events of previous years but just as much fun. Horizon at 77th invites everyone interested in rally events to stay here at the beach where they can get to all points south and north but still take in some beach fun, too.

Thanksgiving at Horizon

Many people say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. Many people also say that coming to the beach is their favorite way to spend leisure time. How about doing both this year!

FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
FOR THE PIE
  • 1 (9 inch) single pie crust
  • 6 apples - peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350º F (175 º C)
  2. Make topping: combine the oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, slivered almonds, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  3. Roll out pie dough into a circle and transfer it to a 9-inch pie plate. Trim the pastry and crimp the edge. Toss the apples with the lemon juice in a bowl to prevent browning. Combine the 1 tablespoon flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon; toss with the apples to coat. Drizzle 1/4 cup of caramel sauce over the bottom of the pie shell. Add the spiced apple mixture; drizzle with remaining 1/4 cup of caramel sauce. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  4. Bake pie in the preheated 350º oven for 50-60 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is browned.

Guest Comments

I enjoyed my stay a great deal. The room was great and more than what I was looking for. I will stay again with you next year. An email from Lisa Alleen from September 12, 2008

This is a great place to stay we loved it. We stayed here from the 23rd until today the 30th.This is a new hotel, and it would be great from everyone. The rooms are great. I didn't dislike anything about this hotel. It was quiet. We were staying at another hotel that we really didnt like upon check-in; I told my hubby I wasn't happy, but we decided to stick it out when we drove past [the Horizon], and I said, "Babe, they take walk-ins, so we looked it up, called, and they said they would take us that night instead of the 24th, so we checked out of the other hotel and came here. I was speechless when I saw the room. We stayed in the one-bedroom our first night, and the rest of our trip was in a 2-bedroom on the 6th floor. We had a great view of the beach overlooking the pool. It was great. The rate on the room was great also. We really enjoyed our stay. If we had longer on our RR, we would have stayed longer. Mother, her husband, my daughter and I loved the Horizon in Myrtle Beach. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 bath on the 6th floor with a angled view of the ocean. Granite counter tops in the kitchen with everything you would need to prepare a meal. Bathrooms were large with plenty of fresh towels. The bedrooms where larger than what I have at home. Good points: steps from the beach in a quiet area on the Strand, on site parking, washer and dryer, balcony and very friendly front desk staff. Needs improvement: more lighting in garage w/ mirrors to see around corners, ceiling fan in smaller bedroom and more lamps. I reported a toaster and ice maker that weren't working and the problem was corrected within 90 minutes. I will be a repeat customer at the Horizon on 77th. Fun Facts

  • Grand Strand's newest celebrity is Michelle Ochs of Surfside Beach. She designed the outfit worn by dog-star Angel, a white Chihuahua making her movie debut in a new Walt Disney film called Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Ochs' company called Doggie Design sold the featured pink-and-green-stripped harness dog-dress to the film's costume direction over a year ago, and the rest is history. The outfit comes with a matching dog-visor and leash. (Incidentally, Paramount Pictures is considering using more fashions from Doggie Design in another film.)

  • Hootie and the Blowfish hosts a Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament in Myrtle Beach. This past April at the Dye course in Barefoot Landing tickets were again sold out. Noted local celebrities mingled with local admirers.

  • Visit Wilmington, NC, and wander over to the waterfront's Cotton Exchange where the promenade in the parking lot features brass stars as tribute to celebrities with ties to Wilmington: Frank Capra, Jr., David Brinkley, Charlie Daniels, Roman Gabriel, Althea Gibson, to name a few.

  • Visitors to the Cotton Exchange have included William Baldwin, Dustin Hoffman, John Travolta, Dennis Hopper, and Nick Nolte. Stay for lunch- you never know who will be seated next to you in a restaurant there!

  • Linda Lavin (best known from TV's hit show Alice) lives in an historic home in Wilmington, runs her theater company there, and gives back to the community in numerous ways.

  • Steve Ward opened a hair salon in Wilmington on Wilshire Boulevard. As a stylist to "red carpet" stars such as Julianne Moore and Angelina Jolie, Ward is a '79 graduate of South Brunswick High School.

  • Murrells Inlet was for many years home to macho mystery and crime novel writer Mickey Spillane whose hero Mike Hammer, aka Mike Danger in comic books, rode roughshod over good and evil alike. In 2006, he died at age 88 after a long illness, leaving a full legacy. One of his famous quotes is, "Tough guys get killed too early."
